Stop sucking mucus from children’s noses, Expert warns mothers On August 16, 2012 ·

Abuja – Mothers should desist from using their mouths to suck out mucus from the noses of their children or risk contracting infection, an Ontologist, Dr Titus Ibekwe, has advised.
Ibekwe, who is also the Chairman of the FCT Branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), gave the advice in an interview on Thursday in Abuja.
He stressed that sucking out the mucus from the child’s nose was not enough to make the child better.
The ontologist said what was needed to be done was to contact a doctor that would deal with the cause of such illness.
“It is not a healthy practice; especially the sucking with mouth, all the organisms that are causing this infection you are trying to take in; to ingest it, and that may even predispose the mother to an infection that she never bargained for.
“Best thing to do is to try as much as possible to clean the nose as it’s flowing; if it’s so bad there are special suction machine that could be used to suck out those mucus.
“It is the bi-product of the infection that the child is having that you are seeing flowing out in the form of mucus until the primary infection is tackled.’’
Ibekwe also said it was wrong to use cotton buds to remove mucus from the child’s nose as the wool on the plastic tube could dislodge and block air passage.
He said once that happened, the child could inhale the wool, which he explained, could go down to the air way and cause upper airway obstruction.
Ibekwe said the obstruction could lead to instant death.
“The skin that lines the nose is very fragile; it has a lot of blood vessels around it; you know about children having nose bleeding; so this can cause such and we discourage it.
“A lot of times a child with a running nose breaths noisily and so keeps the mouth open in the night and hardly sleeps well; it’s not just ordinary catarrh as people call it or ordinary flu.
“In children, you have this adenoid; adenoid is a phenomenon, a lymph node that is at the back of the nose present in every child; but in some children it grows out of proportion and it obstructs the airway.
“There is some level that it will get to that even the medical management will not suffice; you may need to go for surgery and remove the adenoid.’’
Ibekwe therefore advised mothers to seek medical care for the children each time they had running noses, adding that only an expert would be able to diagnose the infection and treat such child.
The physician urged parents to ensure that their children did not insert foreign objects into their noses, saying it could cause nasal infection or running fluid.
He noted the fluid could have offensive odour and repulsive.
“Upper respiratory tract infection that lasts for more than one week is dangerous; therefore, there is the need to see a specialist for proper attention.’’ (NAN)

Why men rape -- a conversation on the research

A rapist being given a mob treatment

In trying to figure out why sexual assault continues to be a problem in Missoula (80 alleged cases in the last three years) and at the University of Montana (more than a dozen in the last year and a half) – it seems important to understand why men rape.
Michael Kimmel has been researching that question for many years, and has written several books about it. Kimmel is distinguished professor of sociology at the State University of New York and a leading authority on male sexual violence. He was an expert witness for the prosecution in a high-profile rape scandal at the University of Colorado a few years ago, where numerous football players and recruits were charged with sexual assault.
Kimmel has also been an expert witness for the civil rights division of the Department of Justice in sex discrimination cases involving the Citadel and Virginia Military Institute. That’s the same federal division that is currently investigating how the Missoula police, county attorney’s office, and UM have handled sexual assault allegations over the last three years.
One of the leading assumptions about why men rape is that they are overcome by lust and testosterone, and in certain situations, just can’t help themselves.
“Rape is not a crime that is driven by lust,” Kimmel said. “Rape is a crime that is driven by contempt – it’s driven by contempt for women, by seeing women as basically the object of a conquest. And if she doesn’t want to [have sex], [these] men feel entitled to take what they want anyway.”
Kimmel calls it an “adversarial” view of sex, where men are competing against the woman – and someone must win.
“Where women have something that men want and men have to break down their resistance and conquer them. So if she gives and he gets, then he wins and she loses.”
Peer support for this attitude of sex as a competition is strong, according to Kimmel. He says men are often encouraged at a young age by their male peers not to listen to “no” from a woman, but to continue to pressure her to “give in.”
And then there is the sanctioned aggression that is hard to turn off.
“This is why for example the military and sports, that foster aggression, tend to also be arenas in which there’s an elevated risk of sexual assault,” said Kimmel.
***
Kimmel says sexual assault committed by male athletes can be traced to their privileged status – the feeling they can do whatever they want and get away with it.
“They’ll always have somebody watching out for them,” said Kimmel, “always have somebody to cover for them, clean up their messes etc.”
Kimmel believes this “culture of support” is why, when a rape scandal breaks out, it shouldn’t be a surprise. And he says it’s that culture that leads to a variety of levels of “not listening.”
“First, the individual case of the guy who doesn’t listen when the woman says ‘no, I don’t want to,’ ” says Kimmel. “Second, the individual coach, or athletic director, assistant coaches who know about it but they don’t really hear what people are saying. Then the administration, which may hear complaints from women saying ‘this stuff’s going on, you gotta do something’ – they don’t hear it. Then the police say ‘oh come on they just gave us free tickets to the game, we love these guys’ – they don’t hear it.”
That refusal to listen is a big reason why, according to Kimmel, so many women who are sexually assaulted don’t feel they can report the assault and be believed. And he says the ones who do report, having overcome all that skepticism and pressure to keep quiet, are not likely making it up.
“My feeling is, if a woman is brave enough to come forward and say that this happened to her, I would say odds are she’s telling the truth,” said Kimmel, “because she has had to go through every one of those obstacles – people telling her not to do it, people trying to talk her out of it – all the way along. So I think if she’s part of the 2 percent that actually goes and reports and says ‘I want to file charges’ – [we should] believe her.”
The message Kimmel most wants to get across is that silence is what keeps rape possible – not the silence of women, but the silence of witnesses and bystanders and most importantly, men.
“Rape culture – the permission men seem to feel that they have, to act on that contempt for women that leads to rape – it turns out that the thing that will really stop that is if other guys stand up and say ’don’t do that – you can’t do that: This isn’t just a women’s problem, rape and sexual assault are men’s problems, and men have to be part of the solution, and part of that solution is men learning to challenge each other.”
And all of us learning to listen.

How Tight Jeans, Childhood Obesity Fuel Infertility, By Medical Experts

Posted by Unknown On Sunday, August 12, 2012 0 comments
Prof--Ashiru
TIGHT, trendy jeans are in vogue. Men and women, boys and girls, even the elderly are embracing it. Most Nigerian families also erroneously celebrate obese children as pointers to affluence. But medical experts say excessively tight jeans, known as skinny jeans, and childhood obesity may be responsible for growing cases of infertility.
Tight jeans have been discovered to cause bladder problems, testicular torsion and damage sperm production; and childhood obesity triggers early onset of puberty, leading to a diminished ability to reproduce – particularly in women.
Medical experts, in reports published recently in the journal, Frontiers in Enocrinology, said there is still much to learn about the consequence of obesity and puberty, as well as its effects on the liver, pancreas and other endocrine glands. But, they say, in general, puberty is starting earlier in girls and the problem is accelerating.
A fertility expert and joint pioneer of the first test tube baby/In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) in Nigeria, Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, told The Guardian: “What wearing tight jeans does to the body is that it brings the scrotum (part of a male’s body located behind the penis) close to the body, which increases the temperature of the testis. The high temperature of the testis will affect sperm production. In the process of trying to adjust to temperature, the testis can be twisted leading to testicular torsion.”
Ashiru, however, said while a direct connection to tight clothing and low sperm counts has not been researched, it has been noted that sperm counts tend to be higher among men who wear boxer shorts for underwear instead of those tight fitting briefs. “If you have to wear tight jeans you have to wear an underwear that is stable,” he said.
The adjunct professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, United States, said the testis is one of a pair of organs (plural is testes) and part of the male reproductive system where sperm is produced. Testicular torsion occurs when the spermatic cord to a testicle twists, cutting off the blood supply (a condition called ischemia).
Ashiru, who is also the medical director of Medical Art Centre (MART) Maryland Surulere, Lagos, said the most common symptom is the rapid onset of acute testicular pain; the most common underlying cause is a congenital malformation known as a “bell-clapper deformity” wherein the testis is inadequately affixed of the spermatic cord allowing it to move too freely on its axis and become entangled.
A study of 2000 British men found one in 10 men wearing skinny jeans incurred testicular torsion. Others complained of bladder problems or urinary infections causing some to slack off skinny jeans use and avoid permanent bladder damage.
According to the study, “the testicular malady is created by the tight jeans constricting free movement of the spermatic cord, which then gets twisted, creating testicular torsion. This cuts off blood supply and can lead to gangrene.”
Prof. Patrick Chappell, of Oregon State University, United States, said: “The issue of so many humans being obese is very recent in evolutionary terms, and since nutritional status is important to reproduction, metabolic syndromes caused by obesity may profoundly affect reproductive capacity.
“Either extreme of the spectrum, anorexia or obesity, can be associated with reproduction problems.”
Chappell added: “Any disruption of circadian clocks throughout the body can cause a number of problems, and major changes in diet and metabolism can affect these cellular clocks.
“Disruption of the clock through diet can even feed into a further disruption of normal metabolism, making the damage worse, as well as affecting sleep and reproduction.”
Previous studies in humans have found correlations between early puberty and the risk of reproductive cancers, adult-onset diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
Early onset puberty has also been associated with increased rates of depression and anxiety in girls, studies have found, as well as increased delinquent behaviour, smoking and early sexual experiences in both girls and boys.

7 Ways To Keep Your Woman In Love And Happy With You

Posted by Unknown On Saturday, August 11, 2012 0 comments
You want to show her what the package includes, should she decide to buy it. And so, unfortunately, once you’ve wooed her and won her, it’s easy to get too comfortable and stop making the large and loving gestures you once made. You think, “She knows that I adore her/find her attractive/am happy with her. So I don’t have to show it.” And, while she probably does know, once the effort goes out the window, so can the excitement of a relationship. And once that goes, your girlfriend/wife can start to wonder, “Is there something else out there? Is this what I want my life to be like?”

A few simple gestures could keep those thoughts at bay.

1. Silly gifts

Remember when you first started dating and every single trinket, CD, funny t-shirt and bag of candy reminded you of her and you were always bringing homes silly gifts? Don’t stop doing that! It shows her that, even on your busiest of days, you always keep a little spot in your mind for her. Little gifts tell her that to some degree, you’re always thinking of her.

2. Compliments

Sure, you’ve made love a hundred times over. She’s gotten dressed up for you even more times. She knows you find her attractive. But, complimenting a woman isn’t only about telling her that you find her attractive—it’s about boosting her confidence. Also, it makes her feel like you still get just as excited to see her as you did on your first few dates. Her appearance isn’t something you’ve become accustomed to, but it still perks you up and gets your attention.

3. Date night

When you fuse two lives, two groups of friends, two families, two careers, things get busy. So busy that, you both accept that alone time will be put on the back burner. You think, “We spend time together. We went to my friend’s birthday party last night and to visit her parents last week!” But, nothing can replace alone time. In order to feel close to you, a woman needs to feel focused on occasionally. Maybe just twice a month, plan a date night. Make it a long, all-night event that’s all about you and her. Your partner needs to be reminded that you are happy to be just with her, no distractions or other people.

4.Caring for her career

Another way you constantly keep your partner on your mind when the relationship is new is by thinking of ways to boost her career. If you meet someone who you think would be a good contact for her, you get their card. If you see a flyer for a class you think would benefit her, you grab it. You want to show her that you are supportive. Being a part of your partner’s successes and passions is a major bonding factor. It should never stop, no matter how exhausted you are by your own career.

5. Making her feel wanted

Of course you still enjoy sex. What man doesn’t? But, maybe now that you don’t have to work so hard to get it, you don’t work for it at all. Instead you just look over at her And ask, “Want to have sex?” But this doesn’t make a woman feel very desired. You don’t need to light up candles and talk dirty every night, but just to diversify things, every so often take her by surprise. Hop in the shower when she’s in there. Walk in the door from work and immediately push her up against a wall. Make her feel like you had to have her. A few incidents like that in just one month is enough fuel for her sexual fantasies for a long time. She will be dying to be with you after something like that.

6. Random texts

Now that you’ve been together for a while, maybe you’ve both accepted that you’re not on each other’s minds as much and that euphoria and infatuation has worn off. But, the instant she gets a funny or sweet mid day text from you, she is time warped back to when you first met. She feels giddy and adored. Sure, she felt secure before and okay with not hearing from you until you got off work. But, sending that little mid day text, maybe under the table in a meeting, says to her, “You’re my partner in crime. You’re my friend. A little interaction with you makes my day 100X better.”

7. Being proud of her

Every woman on some level wants to feel like a trophy. She wants to feel that, out of all the women in the world, she’s the only one you want on your arm. When you first started dating, you couldn’t keep your hands off her. Now, you probably look more like platonic friends when out at a party or bar together than a couple that is madly in love. Surprise her with some PDA (Public Displays of Affection). Next time you’re at a party and she is talking to some friends, come up behind her, wrap your arms around her waist and say, “Look at this woman. Did you know that I am crazy about this woman?” She will LOVE that.
